your questions: hostels, etc.
I was going to resume travel tales, but it sounds like a lot of you are in the process of planning your own trips, so advice would be more timely than pretty pictures. So, let’s talk hostels.
The best way to book hostels is online. I used Hostelworld - you can read reviews, sort by ratings or price. I also asked readers - the suggestions they gave were the most useful. If I haven’t visited the city you’re headed to (and thus not given a thumbs up on a hostel there), drop me a line. I’ll put it out there for readers to chime in.

Well, I don´t know if this only applies to Europe, but I´m gonna ask anyways since you were a New Yorker until very recently so you might know a place or two. I´m going to NYC in April for a few days and of course, the big issue is affordable lodging. Of course, location is crucial, but I´m trying to find a decent hostel (one that offers private rooms as well preferably) in Manhattan. Any ideas?
Can you give us guide to packing? I know it sounds silly, but I’m queen of overpacking, so I’d like to know what you this is useful/important and where to draw the line.
sorry that should have read “what you THINK is useful/important…”
Yes, packing tips would be excellent!
From your pics on This Fish and your Flickr account, all I can gather is that you took a backpack and another smallish bag, and I don’t believe you took your laptop along.
How did you manage to pack light? What took priority in your bag, and what do you wish you could have had the foresight to either pack/not pack?
Thanks!
