travel photo album: stonehenge
“Well, this is sort of anticlimactic.”
“Keep reminding yourself how much the stones weigh and how ancient and mysterious this all is.”
“Right.”
We looped the ring of standing stones, snapping the obligatory photos, and I wondered if any of the other tourists were feeling disappointed. Maybe it’s a whole lot of build-up, only to realize that this wonder of the world juts out into the sky from a traffic island.
Still, I was glad I’d come. Now I could say I’d been there; I’d seen it, even if it didn’t make much of an impact. Which is actually how I feel about a lot of things, like the last episode of Cheers and Quentin Tarantino films.

Just imagine a group of people romping around in the nude at the summer solstice. THAT is what makes it Stonehenge.
Namaste.
I live in England and finally went to visit Stone Henge on the way back from a trip to Newquay a couple of years ago. We couldn’t believe how much it cost when you couldn’t even get that close to it. I understand your sense of disappointment. Still, just as you were I was glad I’d been there.
Nice photo Fish - I really love that lush green (so clean, but hints of rain and the cold yet to come).
Totally disappointed! The night before we went there, we were told it was just a bunch of rocks in a field. The person that told us that was so right. I’m glad I saw it, but I have no desire to see it again.
Oh, but if you think of Spinal Tap you will giggle your ass off.
I’ve been to Stonehenge several times, and I have to say it is at its best with a sunset.
I agree that Stonehenge leaves much to be desired. Something a little more exciting is Longleat Safari Park. http://www.longleat.co.uk/
You can drive your car through the various areas and see tigers, rhinos, lions, giraffes, etc. the only thing standing between you and the animal is your car. (and the ranger’s car should anything happen). If you drive through the monkey section, they’ll climb on your car. Would make for some interesting photos…
we were just (last three days) at York, loved it! the best is just wandering around the old city…
Hey Fish..at least you can say “you’ve been there”, right? I personally giggled when I saw the pictures…can’t help but think of the “Griswalds”!! LOL
I totally agree — really disappointing (although my friend swears she saw Whoopi Goldberg walking around at Stonehenge too — I don’t buy it, why would Whoopi want to see a big pile of rocks either?!)
Wait a sec…”only to realize that this wonder of the world juts out into the sky from a traffic island.” Seriously? Are there things nearby? Why doesn’t anyone take pictures of that? “Stonehenge in the City” would be intriguing. Fish, I’m loving this travelogue. I’d love to take a trip to Europe in the next couple of years — not sure where yet, so I really appreciate all your research!
Heh… I too was underwhelmed… funny how everyone says it was not much and we all still go…
I’ve always thought this was the most over rated tourist attraction…ever. Makes for great photos though. Which is half the fun.
