no place like rome
I was worried about going to Rome. I’d surprised myself in Florence by feeling crowded and overwhelmed. If I felt that way in Florence, how bad was Rome going to be?
My worry was in vain because Rome was fantastic. A big, bustling city full of noise, and energy and potential pick-pockets, I was immediately drawn in. My first afternoon adventure in took me to the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps - some obvious tourist must-sees. Feeling a little anti-tourist? I don’t care. Get your butt up the Spanish Steps and have your camera out. The view is amazing.
Vatican City was a majestic sight. I had no idea that is was so grand, or so beautiful. St. Peter’s Basilica, despite the number of people, is awe-inspiring. Built to honor god, it’s really a testament to the accomplishment of man. Be prepared to go slack-jaw staring at the ceiling. Climbing up the dome (500 steps, through a narrow, winding staircase. It’s not for everyone) was absolutely worth every Euro they charged us. I toured the Vatican with a youngster I met in the hostel who declared the experience, “Totally sweet.” I had to agree. The Sistene Chapel, however… well, I must have experience high levels of stress and impatience, because I got irritated at having to wind all the way through the Vatican Museums to see it. It is glorious, but don’t attempt it if you’re not in the mood for crowds and a good long wait.
On my way back to the hostel, I decided to ditch my map and just let Rome happen. Which is a good pausing point. We’ll take up there tomorrow.
