it’s a thanksgiving q&a, charlie brown

I’m having a hard time getting my head together - I’m sure this is just one of the usual symptoms of jet lag. Isn’t it? I know you’re supposed to be really tired, but mostly, I’m just scatterbrained.

When I get my neurons working again, I’ve got a few words to share on Italian dessert, a comprehensive packing list for first time travelers, and some more glorious photos and stories about Italy.

In the meantime, do you have any questions about Italy or travel in general? Tracey had an excellent one - How much do hostels usually cost? I’ll answer that, and any others after the turkey is digested.

Happy holiday!

  1. Hi Heather! I was just wondering if your traveling job is on going or if it is just a one time deal?

Happy turkey day to you too!

  2. Were you travelling alone most of the time? And if so, have you travelled alone before or was this your first solo trip? And finally, would you or are you going to do it again?

Sorry for the 3 questions - just very curious.

Hope you had an awesome Thanksgiving with your family!

  3. Oh, and I have a ton more, actually. Planning a trip to The Riviera (maybe French, maybe Italian, maybe both), so I’d love to know what the best way to get from place to place is, what were your favorite places in Italy, how long did you really need to spend in each place, can I get by without knowing ANY Italian???

Thanks for sharing your journey with us, Miss Fish! I’m jealous as anything, but mostly just inspired to finally plan that trip to Europe I’ve been daydreaming about for the last 5 years!

And also, as an aside, I’m embarassed at how giddy I am to see my name on your blog. I thought, “Wow, she mentioned someone who spells Tracey the way I do… wait, that’s me, she mentioned ME.” Sad. ;)

  4. I’m so glad you asked about what we are wondering about.

    1) I’d love to see a breakdown by the numbers - how many cities visited, how many nights stayed in each and how much you spent overall. I’m trying to get an idea of how much I would need to travel for 3 solid months, and I think your trip would provide really good insight.

    2) What are your 3 best recommendations for saving money?

    3) What is the biggest waste of money, IYO? What is totally worth the money when traveling on a budget?

    Thanks, Heather!

  5. Loving this blog!

My question. What’s the best way of booking accommodation? On-line or through a travel agent?

  6. Hi Heather!
I’ll be heading off to Europe in Feb so I’m very excited. I look forward to the packing list, but also how much money did you allot yourself for shopping, food, etc. What is a good amount of money to carry or to expect to spend for about 3-4 weeks?
    Thanks!
    Karen

  7. I’m kinda curious about Visas. How hard / how long to get Visas for each of the countries you visited? Or was it more of a just-show-up with your passport kinda thing?

  8. I’m also struggling with the money issue. How did you figure out how much money did you need? Did you end up going over or under that amount? Also is it best to use credit cards, cash or a combination?

I was also wondering about your experience traveling alone in terms of safety. Did you feel confident in your safety because of the countries you were visiting or would you visit any country alone (e.g. Turkey)? I have a friend from Milan and he said he would never let his girlfriend walk anywhere alone after 6pm. Did you have any rules for yourself like this or did you try to go out with people you had met there?

Sorry for the barrage of questions and thanks for your help!
