drive or fly?
I meant to post this last week when it was still fresh and newsy, but I plum forgot. Anyway, I know the article was written for a Salt Lake City media outlet, but the premise is interesting.
Is it cheaper to fly to your summer vacay destination, or drive?
Used to be that the answer was automatic - especially if you were talking about transporting a family to say, Disneyworld or Yellowstone. DRIVE. All those hateful, long hours in the car, testing just how long it would take your dad to yell an expletive and your mom’s voice to reach pitches that only dogs hear.
Now, with gas prices hovering way too close to the $4 a gallon mark, that might be a thing of the past. It might actually be cheaper to fly.
And if your summer destination isn’t within the contiguous 48, all of this is totally moot anyway. Where are you going this summer? Go on, make me jealous.

I’ll be spending two months in Tomsk, Russia. Yeah, that’s in Siberia. Excited, but wishing I was going to be somewhere that wasn’t, you know, Siberia…
Taking a long flight… to San Francisco (90 minutes, woohoo!). That’s as far as my stimulus check would take me.
I’m moving to California, so next week I embark on a cross-country driving adventure! Gas prices be damned - I can’t wait!!
Driving down the coast on Highway 101 from WA to northern CA! If we were to fly, tickets would come mighty close to gas costs. But we are going to drive it because that route is so stinkin’ pretty.
Speaking of increases in road trip expenses, even the dinky, small town, flashing neon sign hotels seem to go for at least $80/night. Grr.
I’ve driven half way across the country twice in the last two months, and both of those trips combined cost me what one flight would, lately. Even with the rising gas prices, it’s still only about 10 bucks extra per tank. Thats only about 25 bucks a trip. So far.
Another question to ask… which option is more environmentally friendly?
“And if your summer destination isn’t within the contiguous 48, all of this is totally moot anyway”
Au contraire!
The best vacation I ever had was a three week road trip from Chicago to Alaska (and then back) in 2006. Gas was hovering around 3 at that point (more in Canada) but it still cost less, and was infinitely better than, flying 2 people round trip from Chicago to Anchorage.
I’m doing a one-month Europe-Russia excursion with my newlywed husband and my parents, it should be very interesting!
We’re heading to Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Moscow, St.Petersburg and Copenhagen. I’ve never been to any of them so I’m ridiculously excited!
I’m in the process of figuring that out, because my wanderlust is killing me.
So, random question as part of my research - do you (or anyone) know of any great international travel volunteer opportunities? I’d only have 2, possibly 3, weeks. Total costs for the trip would need to be under $2500.

And I’m hoping that it would also include meeting a diverse, interesting group of people and experiencing some of the culture and geography of wherever I am.
